OTF adheres to both the act and spirit of the French Language Services Act (FLSA) in providing services in both official languages. The incumbent of this position works with all areas of OTF to oversee the preparation of public information material in French. Material in French must be of equal quality and content as the material in English and distributed simultaneously in both languages. The incumbent must demonstrate a French language proficiency rated at the superior level to oversee the translation of a wide range of communication products in French.
Reporting to the Manager of Communications, the Translation Services Officer plans and executes English to French and French to English translation requests for OTF. The incumbent provides French language expertise and services to support the organization’s commitment to deliver services in French to Ontarians.
What can I expect to do in this role?
- Oversee the release of OTF’s public information in French across all departments and programs, ensuring it is accurate, clear, consistently aligned with the English. This includes but not limited to all public-facing communications such as website content, PowerPoint presentations, emails, and corporate documents (e.g. annual reports and business plans).
- Provide subject matter expertise across OTF to establish or update French terminology, enabling bilingual staff to deliver high-quality French services to the public.
- Manage OTF’s bilingual lexicon and update it on an ongoing basis to increase translation productivity and ensure consistency between all translation suppliers.
- Stay informed of current translation industry trends and ensure OTF remains current and competitive in its practice.
Translation Coordination
- Receive, manage, and deliver a high volume of English to French and French to English translation requests of varying complexity in a fast-paced environment and within tight timelines.
- Complete small or urgent translation requests internally to ensure timely support.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders across departments and programs to understand translation needs, manage expectations, and provide guidance on best practices.
- Work with a reliable team of qualified translation vendors in collaboration with OTF procurement services and develop an excellent work relationship with each vendor.
- Receive and verify invoices to support timely and accurate payment to translation vendors.
- Oversee the performance of each translation vendor and provide feedback to boost performance, enhance consistency, and guarantee the quality of public-facing information in French.
- Develop and adapt processes to ensure value for money in translation services by tracking workload and performance, delivering quarterly reports, and continuously improving to meet organizational needs.
- Work with OTF’s French Language Services Coordinator to support the delivery of FLSA requirements and the overall quality of French language services at OTF.

- Clear understanding of OTF’s commitment to deliver on the FLSA and knowledge of the relevant provincial protocols and policies relating to bilingual requirements as an agency of the Ontario government.
- Leadership and project management skills to plan and execute complex translation projects while working collaboratively with multiple internal stakeholders and translation suppliers.
- Problem-solving skills to manage projects, juggle competing priorities, and proactively identify and address issues.
- Superior written and oral communication skills in French and English with exceptional translation, writing, editing, and revision skills.
- Detail oriented, process focused, and able to grasp how projects fit in OTF’s overall strategy.
- Ability to effectively communicate with internal stakeholders at all levels of the organization and with external translation suppliers to plan projects, discuss challenges, work to deadlines, and provide feedback.
- Capacity to deal with sensitive materials, maintain confidentiality, and have good judgement when working with translation vendors and internal stakeholders.
- High degree of comfort with technology and various platforms with an understanding of computer assisted translation software used by all translation providers.
- Ability to work independently, with no supervision related for French language quality, while being self-motivated and accountable for the quality work and decision-making.

How do I qualify?
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in a relevant discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Three to five years of progressive experience in a bilingual services role, including working with professional translators, and undertaking translation, revision, and editing, with French language proficiency at the superior level on the Ontario Public Service French Language Proficiency scale.
- Experience and demonstrated success in project management.
- Knowledge of the diversity of Ontario Francophone communities and OTF stakeholder groups.
