Honouring National Indigenous History Month

June is National Indigenous History Month—a time to honour the rich histories, vibrant cultures, and enduring contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples across Canada.

This month offers a meaningful opportunity to learn, reflect, and celebrate the diverse Indigenous communities who have lived on these lands since time immemorial.

June 21 marks National Indigenous Peoples Day, a date that holds deep cultural and spiritual significance. Coinciding with the summer solstice, it has long been a time of celebration for Indigenous communities, who gather to share traditions through music, dance, storytelling, food, art, and ceremony—many of which are being revitalized and reclaimed.

OTF is proud to support Indigenous communities through its community-based funding. Since 2019, OTF has invested over $54 million in initiatives that support Indigenous communities—from language revitalization and traditional arts to culturally grounded supports, skills training, and environmental stewardship.

How You Can Engage and Celebrate

There are many ways to show your support and celebrate Indigenous culture:

  • Attend a Pow-Wow or Community Celebration: Experience the beauty of Indigenous culture through dance, music, and ceremony.
  • Read Books by Indigenous Authors: Explore powerful stories and perspectives in both English and French.
  • Support Indigenous Artists and Businesses: Purchase handmade crafts, artwork, or goods from Indigenous creators.
  • Join Local Events: Check out Indigenous-led events happening in your area throughout June.

Let’s come together this month to celebrate the strength, creativity, and resilience of Indigenous peoples—and commit to learning and growing as allies.
