Celebrating the strength and spirit of Black Ontarians

In February, the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) celebrates Black Heritage Month, embracing the opportunity to explore and learn about the heritage, traditions and culture of Black Ontarians.
As we take time to honour the strength and spirit of the Black community, we recognize their resilience in building community and contributing to society in the face of anti-Black oppression.
The contributions and leadership of Black Ontarians are reflected in all sectors and fields whether it be in politics, medicine, education, sports, finance, social work or technology and science and continues to shape the future of Ontario. Moreover, people of African and Caribbean descent share a rich mosaic of culture and traditions that enhance Ontario’s cultural and economic diversity and vibrancy.
During Black Heritage Month, a spotlight is put on the work of Black civil rights leaders who continue to address anti-Black racism, discrimination and inequity in our communities. As a public agency and funder, OTF supports a range of projects that reflect the diversity of Ontarians and help to address systemic barriers. OTF’s Framework for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion lays out our pathway to success in this work.
Each year, OTF funds over 400 community-led projects to build healthy and vibrant communities. Since 2015, OTF has invested more than $116 million in projects benefitting Black communities across Ontario through our different granting programs. Explore the grants awarded serving Black communities.
