SVX and VERGE Capital, along with partners including the Centre for Social Innovation and the Upper Canada Social Impact Fund, are hosting a Social Innovation and Social Finance Month using the OTF Knowledge Centre to educate Ontarians on the opportunity around social enterprise and social finance.
There is great momentum in this approach to tackling social and environmental challenges. The federal government recently released recommendations from the Social Innovation and Social Finance Strategy Co-Creation Steering Group. The report includes 12 recommendations proposing ways that social innovation—ideas that help communities respond to a challenge more effectively—and social finance—financial investments that create a social or environmental impact—could be incorporated into a comprehensive strategy to build more inclusive and prosperous communities, and in doing so, improve the lives of vulnerable Canadians and create a more inclusive middle class. This builds upon leadership by the provincial government with its longstanding commitment to social enterprise through their Office of Social Enterprise and Social Enterprise Strategy.
Social Innovation and Social Finance Month will include a series of blogs and webinars to explore social finance and social enterprise, concluding with a live webinar featuring case examples of enterprises and intermediaries using social finance to scale their impact. This month will lead into Canada’s signature social finance event, the Social Finance Forum, which is held at MaRS on November 8-9.
